Put together by acclaimed Derby musicians who decided to see how the Cajun music of Louisiana and Celtic music could blend in a natural way to create a sound they have dubbed...
SWAMP TRASH. It’s purely a joyous celebration of two musical cultures using Accordion, Mandolin, Harmonica, Mando-Cello, Bass Guitar, Whistles and Percussion.
Think of it as the music you might hear in a Galway bar if The Cajuns were over on tour and an after hour's session kicked off, the Jameson’s and Southern Comfort were flowing, everyone put their troubles behind them and fired into a bunch of tunes and songs just like old friends.
THE BAND
Chris Hall: Accordions and vocals: Known internationally as the founder member and front man of formidable UK bands R.Cajun and the Zydeco Brothers, The Bearcats and The Cajun Roosters. With a reputation second to none as master of the Cajun Squeezebox he’s constantly touring Europe. His reputation has led to recordings with Kate Bush, Seth Lakeman, Mike Harding and Bill Wyman as well as countless recordings with his own bands. Even more impressive have been his recordings and gigs with Paul McCartney, Dave Gilmour, Ian Paice, Mick Green and Pete Wingfield with appearances on The Tube, Jools Holland Show, Top of the Pops and a gig at the legendary Cavern Club in Liverpool. With all that under his belt he loves nothing more than to play in the corner of a bar and make music with people he can groove with and give audiences a night to remember.
Mick Doyle, Andy Cooper: Mandolin / Bass Ukulele / Percussion. True masters of all things Celtic, Mick, and Andy have worked together for over 25 years. They’ve played music in bands of acclaim all their careers, probably best known their work with Derby Celtic Rock bands; Neverland, No Right Turn and The Rattlers. They’ve toured all over Europe and have an instinctive feel for the grooves required to give music that extra funk. In this partnership they throw down grooves that are unexpected in Louisiana Cajun Swamp Music yet sound as if they’ve always been a part of it. Andy and Mick also recently teamed up and toured with Levellers front man Simon Friend in his new band Simon Friend’s Seismic Survey.
THE MUSIC
You may hear a few songs you recognise by the likes of Van Morrison, Steve Earle or JJ Cale. You’re equally likely to hear hypnotic Cajun two steps with a funky Celtic edge and drinking songs, taking you back to a glorious land where the Craic is mighty and the good times roll all night long. Plus catchy self penned songs in a Cajun/Celtic style. It’s a collaboration made in heaven... but doesn’t everyone say that?
In reality, it’s a collaboration made in backroom bars, jamming long into the night and experimenting with music that nobody planned but fondly remembered the next day. Then one day someone said... “Hey that’s a cool sound... you guys should play together more often” So we did... and here we are! It’s Celtic and Swamp Music stirred in a pot...Oh and its TRASH in the best sense of the word. Nothing too holy or too reverential, just high quality trash of the best kind. So come join us and get well and truly... TRASHED!!
